Why Alchemy Unbound?

Alchemy Unbound is our flagship pilot program and the primary way we bring our mission to life.

It is an after-school, non-school-based program that supports high school students in exploring personal interests, building relationships with supportive adults, developing social capital, practicing professional communication, engaging in real-world learning beyond the classroom

Our model is rooted in Big Picture Learning’s B-Unbound philosophy:

“The students are the curriculum. The community is the school.”

Alchemy Unbound is intentionally designed as a learning lab. We pilot with small groups, document student experiences, collect qualitative and quantitative data, engage in ongoing reflection, and refine our model over time. Our research efforts include attendance tracking, student surveys, advisor and supportive adult reflections, learning artifacts, and thoughtfully collected qualitative data. Our long-term goal is to publish a white paper sharing insights from the pilot to inform future practice in interest-driven, community-based education and to use what we learn to drive our future as an organization.
